Earth Day at Vanier
I have to say, nothing is better than dedicating an entire day to our planet to remind ourselves of the terrible damage we are doing to it. Too bad it’s not like this every day, our selfish needs are way too important for every person to think twice about their actions. This is what made my day interesting on April 22nd, given that, it gave me a chance to stop and think of what is really going on and how I, myself am contributing to the damage of the planet. My only disappointment that day was the fact that not many students came to visit our stand with our posters. Perhaps that may be due to the fact that we did not have a very welcoming stands as others did. For instance, we were not able to compete with groups who offered good “attention-grabbers” like free cotton candy, ice tea, and popcorn. In addition, other groups had more visitors since they were situated in the center of “Jake’s cafeteria” as opposed to us who were all the way in the back of the room. Nevertheless, besides the fact that my group and I were not as promotive, at the end of the day, I felt like a proud supporter of earth day and I was happy to participate in this event. Another thing I really enjoyed was visiting other student’s stands and learning something new for myself. For example, a group who offered free “Ice Tea” caught my attention and taught me the significance of “fair trade”. This changed my whole perspective of earth day since it made me realize that April 22nd is not about being “green” towards the planet, instead, it is about respecting the planet as a whole; that includes ourselves and others. In a nutshell, besides the fact that my group and I did not have as many visitors as we had expected, it was a wonderful experience supporting earth day at Vanier. I got to learn new things and teach new things. It really felt good participating in a good movement like this one; I would definitely do it again.
